Mountain Scrambling is that grey area between walking and climbing. Hands are used a lot but vertical sections are fairly short. A good head for heights is needed but hand and foot holds abound. Mountain Scrambling

Scrambling needs some special skills and care, but is adventurous and exciting. Scrambling is great fun, everyone should give it a go!

Before you get out on the mountain side, your instructors should  practice a few knots and techniques in the comfort of your chosen accommodation the evening before.


On the activity day you'll get the chance to try out these and much more on real rock when your  out enjoying Snowdonia's rugged buttresses, ridges and gullies. Your  instructor will aim to give you a good grounding in the basic techniques of scrambling as well as ensuring that you have a great time Scrambling in Snowdonia.

<h1>Essential Equipment</h1>

  • Waterproof / windproof outer layer (including protection for the legs)
  • Warm inner (base) & mid-layer(s)
  • Suitable footwear walking boots
  • Map, compass and watch
  • Torch / headtorch and whistle
  • First aid kit – lightweight and simple
  • Adequate food and drink – drinks bottle – flask of hot drink in cold weather
  • Rucksack to carry it in
  • Hat / balaclava and gloves
  • Spare warm clothes (extra layers for very cold conditions or emergencies)
  • Survival bag or lightweight bivvy shelter for group use
  • High energy emergency food - only intended for use in an emergency
  • Resealable plastic bags to keep equipment dry

May also be required:-

  • Helmet - advisable for some scrambling routes
  • Gaiters
  • Insect repellent (anti midge) especially in Scotland
  • Good sunglasses
  • Sunblock / sunhat

Other useful items:-

  • Mobile / cellular phone (recommended)
  • Walking poles
  • GPS receiver and spare batteries
  • Camera (and film for film cameras)
